WORTHINGTON -- There seems to be a difference of opinion whether Ashlynn Wabeke is in full possession of her shooting touch.
"I have not been shooting well for the last few games," Wabeke said following Minnesota West's 81-43 victory Wednesday night over visiting MState-Fergus Falls.
Nonsense, said her coach, Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka, who maintained that any suggestion that the 5-9 sophomore forward has been inconsistent with her shot-making is off the mark.
"In her head, she has been," Hayenga-Hostikka said. "She expects to make every shot. Instead of that, I think she should have been taking more shots."
The Lady Jays coach believes Wabeke is one of the best shooters she's ever coached. She certainly didn't change her mind Wednesday night as the Ruthton product scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 3-point shooting. Wabeke converted five of eight 3-pointers in the first half alone as the Jays moved out to a 43-19 halftime lead.
In yet another of several post-holiday games where the Lady Jays were never threatened, the team improved to 18-4 overall and 9-0 in Southern Division play. West is alone on top of the conference standings and are happy to be there.
"It's nice to beat teams like that. But I prefer close games. It shows who's most athletic at the end," Wabeke said.
On Wednesday, the Lady Jays showed their athleticism through four full quarters.
"I'll take that," said Hayenga-Hostikka. "But I think we're playing pretty well. I think we played pretty unselfish tonight. I think that we just have that mentality. There's nothing that makes me more proud. The assist is my favorite thing in basketball."
In addition to the scoring of Wabeke, who Hayenga-Hostikka says always has the green light, Andrea Hinkeldey scored 20 points for the winners. Katherin Ihnen, who shared Player of the Week honors in the division this week, had 11 points. Emily Haubrich and M'Kayla Mike had 10 points apiece.
Wabeke also had 10 rebounds while Ihnen contributed nine. Haubrich dished out nine assists and Hinkeldey was credited with four. Mike, who teamed with Haubrich to provide fine ball-handling for the Jays, had five steals and three assists.
Macky Warne led MState-Fergus Falls (6-16, 2-7) with 17 points. The Spartans turned the ball over 23 times to West's 12.
Minnesota West got off to a quick start with a Hinkeldey layup and the first of Wabeke's seven 3-pointers for a 5-0 lead. It wasn't until 2:56 remained in the first quarter when the Spartans scored their first point.
Leading 19-4 heading into the second quarter, Minnesota West scored the first five points for a 24-4 advantage. Fergus Falls, without a consistent outside shooter and lacking the athleticism inside against an aggressive West defense, continued to struggle offensively.
The Spartans improved their movement and their passing early in the second half. But although they looked better, they were unable to grab momentum away from their hosts.
